FRANCONIA — Franconia is poised to become the first municipality in New Hampshire to declare itself a sanctuary community, under a resolution considered Monday by the town’s Select Board. The proposal, introduced by Selectman Eric Meth, would prohibit the Franconia Police Department from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While several New Hampshire towns have adopted “welcoming ordinances” that limit such cooperation, none have formally declared sanctuary status. Meth said the resolution was intended to send a clear message about the town’s values and its opposition to what he views as unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices.
