LITTLETON, N.H. — Most area residents have had black bear encounters but there is much to learn about the species known as Ursus Americanus. The average specimen weights between 150 and 250 pounds and, although they are called black bears, there are color variations. Locally they usually are black save for a brown or tan muzzle. Food wise, they are omnivorous and will dine on almost anything, bird feeders being a special treat. On October 10 a steward from N.H. Fish and Game will be at the Littleton Area Senior Center to share information about bears in New Hampshire, impart the history of these mammals, and ways to avoid potentially conflicts. Info will be shared about the federal funding mechanism that supports long-term research, “and is largely responsible for our country’s abundant fish and wildlife,” officials said. “Our presentation will discuss the best ways to appreciate bears living among us without a negative impact on either.” The presentation is at 10:30 a.m. Littleton Area Senior Center is at 77 Riverglen Lane.
