A Newport Center man was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on March 14, the result of a two-vehicle crash at 4:21 p.m. on Rt. 100. State troopers said a southbound vehicle operated by Shane Prue, 33, of Newport Center, was being driven recklessly, well in excess of the speed limit and was passing vehicles in a no-passing zone. Police say Prue narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a vehicle traveling north but collided with a trailer towed by Thomas Whitestone, 48, of Richford, who was also traveling south. Prue lost control of his vehicle, went off the roadway, struck a culvert and a pile of large rocks. Troopers noted that the entire engine of Prue’s vehicle became dislodged and flew through the air, striking utility lines before landing back in the roadway. Whitestone was uninjured. The trailer to his 2025 Ford Explorer was damaged, while Prue’s 2019 Honda was totaled. The crash remains under investigation. Any additional witnesses who have not yet spoken with troopers are asked to call the Derby barracks and ask for Tpr. Nash or Sgt. Mikkola.
