ST. JOHNSBURY — Two women in different vehicles were hurt when the vehicles crashed on Thursday in the intersection of Route 5 and Main Street. They were both conscious and alert when CALEX Ambulance crews loaded them into separate ambulances for trips to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. A Chevrolet Cruze with extensive front-end damage was parked near the driveway to Green Mountain Power. The other vehicle in the crash, a Subaru Solterra, rested perpendicular to the road covering a portion of the northbound lane about 35 yards south of the intersection. After being struck by the Cruze, the Subaru swerved and crossed a narrow grass median from the southbound lanes to the northbound lanes. Side airbags had been deployed in the crash and there was damage to the driver’s side of the car. The Solterra’s driver, Joseph Buongiovanni, 75, of Concord, was not hurt, but his female passenger was. The driver of the Cruze was Janet Hale, 88, of St. Johnsbury. Her vehicle’s driver’s side air bag had been activated in the crash. An eyewitness told Capt. Jason Gray that the Cruze had entered the intersection from South Main Street without stopping at a stop sign and crashed into the Solterra. Both vehicles needed to be towed from the scene of the crash.
